General Weather:
Kilimanjaro experiences a wide range of temperatures due to its varying altitudes. At the base, temperatures are typically between 21-27°C (70-80°F), but they can plummet to -29°C (-20°F) at the summit. Climbers should prepare for diverse conditions, including sun, rain, wind, and snow, as the weather can change quickly.

Rain and Snow:
While dry seasons are best for climbing, rain and snow can occur throughout the year. Rain is common on lower slopes, while snow is possible at the summit, especially from March to May due to trade winds.

  • Base: 21-27°C (70-80°F)
  • Summit: -7 to -29°C (20 to -20°F)

Climate Zones:

  • Cultivation Zone (2,600-6,000 ft / 800-1,800 m): Farmland with temperate conditions and 20-70 in (500-1,800 mm) of precipitation.
  • Forest Zone (6,000-9,200 ft / 1,800-2,800 m): Warm, humid rainforest with 79-40 in (2,000-1,000 mm) of precipitation.
  • Heath/Moorland Zone (9,200-13,200 ft / 2,800-4,000 m): Cold nights with 51-21 in (1,300-530 mm) of precipitation, featuring tall grasses and giant heathers.
  • Alpine/High Desert Zone (13,200-16,500 ft / 4,000-5,000 m): Arid with 10 in (250 mm) of precipitation, featuring hardy plants.
  • Arctic Zone (16,500+ ft / 5,000+ m): Barren with 4 in (100 mm) of precipitation, characterized by extreme cold and rocky outcrops.

Weather Variations by Season:

  • April-May: Rainy season with heavy precipitation.
  • June-October: Dry season, excellent for climbing with minimal rain.
  • January-March: Colder with possible snow at higher altitudes.

Kilimanjaro Weather Month by Month:

  • Long Dry Season (June to September): Best climbing conditions with minimal precipitation. Slightly colder temperatures.
  • Short Wet Season (October to December): Unpredictable rains starting in October. Average temperature is 24.4°C (76°F), with increasing rain and cloudy skies. Not ideal for climbing.
  • Short Dry Season (January to February): Warmer than the long dry season, popular for trekking.
  • Long Wet Season (March to May): Heavy rains, making trails wet and dangerous. Climbing is not advised.

Weather at the Summit:

  • Climb Start: Typically begins around midnight to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise.
  • Conditions: Extremely cold with potential snow or ice. Temperatures range from -7 to -29°C (20 to -20°F).
  • Views: Clear skies offer stunning panoramic views of Mawenzi and the African plains.
