6 Days Marangu Route

Accommodation: Mountain Huts
Success Rate: ~65–75%
Why this option: Extra day for acclimatization improves summit success and comfort.

DAY 1: MARANGU GATE – MANDARA HUT (2,700m)

After breakfast at your hotel, drive to Marangu Gate for park registration.
The trek begins through a lush rainforest, rich in birdlife and monkeys. The trail is wide and gently ascending, making it a relaxed first day on the mountain.

You arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon. After lunch and rest, your guide may take you on a short walk to Maundi Crater, where you enjoy scenic views of the surrounding forest and Kibo Peak.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Zone: Rainforest
Overnight: Mandara Hut

DAY 2: MANDARA HUT – HOROMBO HUT (3,720m)

Leaving the rainforest behind, you enter the heath and moorland zone.
Vegetation becomes more open, with giant heathers and volcanic rock formations.

As altitude increases, the pace remains slow and steady. On clear days, you will see Mawenzi Peak rising sharply to the east and Kibo Peak ahead.

Arrive at Horombo Hut, where you rest and enjoy wide alpine views.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Zone: Heath & Moorland
Overnight: Horombo Hut

DAY 3: ACCLIMATIZATION DAY – ZEBRA ROCKS

After breakfast, you hike uphill toward Zebra Rocks for acclimatization.
This short hike allows your body to adapt while enjoying dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak and the open moorland.

You return to Horombo Hut for lunch and rest.

Hiking Time: 2–3 hours
Purpose: Acclimatization
Overnight: Horombo Hut

DAY 4: HOROMBO HUT – KIBO HUT (4,700m)

Today you cross the alpine desert, a vast, dry, and rocky landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Vegetation disappears, and temperatures drop noticeably.

You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the summit attempt.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Zone: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Kibo Hut

DAY 5: SUMMIT DAY – KIBO HUT → UHURU PEAK → HOROMBO HUT

You wake around midnight and begin the steep ascent toward Gilman’s Point, passing Hans Meyer Cave.
From the crater rim, you continue along the edge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

After photos and celebration, you descend carefully back to Horombo Hut.

Hiking Time: 12–14 hours

DAY 6: HOROMBO HUT – MARANGU GATE

Descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate.
You receive your summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi.
