- 7 Days Lemosho Routes
Duration: 7 Days on the mountain
Accommodation: Camping
Success Rate: ~85%
Why choose this route: One of the most scenic routes on Kilimanjaro, quiet trails, excellent acclimatization profile, and high summit success rate.
DAY 1: LONDOROSSI GATE – MTI MKUBWA CAMP (2,650m)
After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, you drive to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro for registration and permits.
From the gate, you continue by vehicle to the trailhead before starting your trek.
The hike begins through pristine rainforest, an area known for its rich biodiversity. The forest is thick with tall trees, moss, and ferns, and you may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys or hear birds calling overhead.
The trail is gentle and slightly ascending, allowing your body to begin adapting to altitude comfortably.
You arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) in the afternoon, where you relax and enjoy your first night on the mountain.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Vegetation Zone: Rainforest
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
DAY 2: MTI MKUBWA CAMP – SHIRA 1 CAMP (3,500m)
After breakfast, you continue climbing as the forest gradually thins out.
The vegetation changes from tall rainforest to heath and moorland, with open views starting to appear.
As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes wider and more dramatic. On clear days, you can see the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world.
The pace remains slow and steady to support acclimatization.
You arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located on the western edge of the plateau, where you rest and enjoy expansive mountain views.
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Vegetation Zone: Heath & Moorland
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
DAY 3: SHIRA 1 CAMP – SHIRA 2 CAMP (3,850m)
Today is a relatively short and gentle day, designed specifically for acclimatization.
You walk across the vast Shira Plateau, surrounded by wide open landscapes and volcanic rock formations.
The views of Kibo Peak become clearer and more impressive as you move closer.
Because the walking time is shorter, you arrive early at Shira 2 Camp, giving you time to rest, hydrate, and allow your body to adjust to the altitude.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Purpose: Acclimatization
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
DAY 4: SHIRA 2 CAMP – LAVA TOWER (4,630m) – BARRANCO CAMP (3,960m)
This is an important “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization day.
After breakfast, you leave the plateau and climb steadily toward Lava Tower, an ancient volcanic formation.
At Lava Tower, the altitude is strongly felt, making this a key day for adaptation.
After lunch, you descend into the greener Barranco Valley, where oxygen levels are higher and recovery is easier.
You arrive at Barranco Camp, located beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall, one of the most iconic features on Kilimanjaro.
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert → Moorland
Overnight: Barranco Camp
DAY 5: BARRANCO CAMP – KARANGA CAMP (4,035m)
After breakfast, you tackle the famous Barranco Wall.
This is a fun and exciting scramble using hands in some sections, but it is not technical climbing. From the top, you are rewarded with stunning views back toward Barranco Valley.
The trail then continues across alpine ridges and valleys with beautiful views of glaciers and Kibo Peak.
You arrive at Karanga Camp in the afternoon, where you rest and prepare for the final ascent.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Karanga Camp
DAY 6: KARANGA CAMP – BARAFU CAMP (4,673m)
Today is a shorter but steeper climb to Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit attempt.
The environment becomes rocky, cold, and windy, with very little vegetation.
After arrival, you rest, hydrate, and eat an early dinner.
Your guide provides a final summit briefing, explaining pacing, safety, and what to expect during the night climb.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barafu Camp
DAY 7: SUMMIT DAY – BARAFU CAMP → UHURU PEAK (5,895m) → MWEKA CAMP (3,100m)
You wake around midnight for tea and light snacks before starting the summit attempt under the stars.
The climb is slow and steady, passing Stella Point on the crater rim, then continuing along the edge to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After photos and celebration at the summit, you begin a long descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp, located in the forest zone.
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Vegetation Zone: Arctic → Rainforest
Overnight: Mweka Camp
DAY 8: MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE (EXIT)
(Exit day – same for all camping routes)
Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, receive summit certificates, then transfer back to your hotel in Moshi.
