4-Day Mount Meru Trek Overview
The 4-Day Mount Meru Trek is the most popular itinerary for climbing Mount Meru, offering a well-paced adventure with better acclimatization and a higher chance of reaching the summit. Standing at 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and is located within the scenic Arusha National Park.This trek takes you through diverse landscapes, starting from lush rainforest filled with wildlife, continuing through open heathland, and ending in dramatic alpine terrain near the summit. Along the way, trekkers may see giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and many bird species. The highlight of the journey is reaching Socialist Peak, where climbers enjoy spectacular sunrise views and breathtaking scenery, including a distant view of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Day 1: Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut
Your adventure begins at Momella Gate where you complete park registration and meet your trekking team. The trail passes through open grasslands and dense forest where wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, and monkeys can often be seen. After several hours of trekking, you will arrive at Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut
After breakfast, the trek continues through forest and heathland with beautiful views of the Meru crater and surrounding landscapes. As you climb higher, the vegetation becomes thinner and the views become more dramatic. You will reach Saddle Hut in the afternoon. Later, you can take a short acclimatization hike to Little Meru before returning to the hut for dinner and rest.
Day 3: Summit Attempt – Return to Miriakamba Hut
The summit climb begins early in the morning around midnight. You will hike along a narrow ridge toward Socialist Peak. Reaching the summit at sunrise offers breathtaking views and a chance to see Mount Kilimanjaro above the clouds. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut for overnight.
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed descent through the forest back to Momella Gate. The trek ends here, where you will receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Arusha, marking the end of an unforgettable Mount Meru adventure.
