5 Days Marangu Route
Accommodation: Mountain Huts
Success Rate: ~60–70%
DAY 1: MARANGU GATE – MANDARA HUT (2,700m)
After breakfast at your hotel, you will drive to Marangu Gate, the main entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. Here, your guide completes registration formalities while you prepare for the trek.
The hike begins through a dense tropical rainforest, where the air is humid and fresh. The trail is wide and well maintained, making it one of the easiest starts on the mountain. Along the way, you may see blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and a variety of bird species.
After a steady walk, you arrive at Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop on the mountain. In the afternoon, your guide may take you on a short acclimatization walk to Maundi Crater, offering your first views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding lowlands.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Vegetation Zone: Rainforest
Overnight: Mandara Hut
DAY 2: MANDARA HUT – HOROMBO HUT (3,720m)
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and begin ascending into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation changes noticeably, with giant heathers and open landscapes replacing tall trees.
As you climb higher, the air becomes cooler and drier. On clear days, you will enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak. The trail is gradual but longer, so the pace remains slow to help your body adjust to the altitude.
You arrive at Horombo Hut, a large hut complex set on an open plateau. The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and enjoying the surrounding alpine scenery.
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Vegetation Zone: Heath & Moorland
Overnight: Horombo Hut
DAY 3: ACCLIMATIZATION DAY – ZEBRA ROCKS – HOROMBO HUT
This day is dedicated entirely to acclimatization. After breakfast, you hike uphill toward Zebra Rocks, named after their black-and-white striped appearance.
The hike allows your body to experience higher altitude before returning to sleep lower. Along the way, you enjoy close-up views of Mawenzi Peak and the vast moorland landscape.
After spending time at Zebra Rocks, you descend back to Horombo Hut for lunch and rest.
Hiking Time: 2–3 hours
Purpose: Acclimatization
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Continue your ascent through the alpine desert, with increasingly dramatic and barren landscapes. Reach Kibo Hut after 5–6 hours and rest in preparation for your summit attempt later that night
DAY 4: SUMMIT DAY – HOROMBO HUT → UHURU PEAK → HOROMBO HUT
You wake up around midnight for tea and light snacks before beginning the summit attempt. The trail climbs steadily through the alpine desert, passing Gilman’s Point on the crater rim.
From Gilman’s Point, you continue along the crater edge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, you begin the long descent back to Horombo Hut.
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert & Arctic
DAY 5: HOROMBO HUT – MARANGU GATE
After breakfast, you descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you receive your summit certificate, then transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned rest.
