- 8 Days Lemosho Routes
Duration: 8 Days on the mountain
Accommodation: Camping
Success Rate: ~90%
Why choose this route: Extra acclimatization day gives one of the highest summit success rates on Kilimanjaro, with stunning and quiet scenery.
DAY 1: LONDOROSSI GATE – MTI MKUBWA CAMP (2,650m)
After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, you drive to Londorossi Gate for registration.
You then continue to the trailhead and begin trekking through untouched rainforest, rich in birdlife and occasionally monkeys.
The trail is gentle and allows your body to start adapting comfortably.
You arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, surrounded by tall trees and fresh mountain air.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Vegetation Zone: Rainforest
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
DAY 2: MTI MKUBWA CAMP – SHIRA 1 CAMP (3,500m)
The forest gradually thins as you climb higher.
Vegetation transitions into heath and moorland, with wider views opening across the western slopes.
You walk at a slow, steady pace to support acclimatization.
Arrival at Shira 1 Camp, located on the edge of the Shira Plateau, offers expansive views of the mountain.
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
DAY 3: SHIRA 1 CAMP – SHIRA 2 CAMP (3,850m)
Today is a gentle walk across the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world.
The terrain is relatively flat, allowing your body to adjust naturally to the altitude.
Views of Kibo Peak become clearer and more impressive.
You arrive early at Shira 2 Camp, giving time for rest and hydration.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Purpose: Acclimatization
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
DAY 4: SHIRA 2 CAMP – MOIR HUT (4,200m)
This extra acclimatization day takes you north of the main trail, away from crowds.
The route offers remote scenery, volcanic rock formations, and panoramic views across the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro.
You arrive at Moir Hut, a quiet and isolated camp that significantly enhances acclimatization.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Overnight: Moir Hut
DAY 5: MOIR HUT – LAVA TOWER – BARRANCO CAMP (3,960m)
You ascend toward Lava Tower, experiencing higher altitude before descending again.
This “climb high, sleep low” strategy strengthens your body’s adaptation.
After lunch, descend into the greener Barranco Valley, arriving at Barranco Camp beneath the Barranco Wall.
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Overnight: Barranco Camp
DAY 6: BARRANCO CAMP – KARANGA CAMP (4,035m)
Climb the famous Barranco Wall, an enjoyable scramble with amazing views.
Continue across alpine ridges to Karanga Camp, your final acclimatization camp before the summit.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Overnight: Karanga Camp
DAY 7: KARANGA CAMP – BARAFU CAMP (4,673m)
Short but steep ascent to Barafu Camp.
After early dinner, your guide conducts a final summit briefing and prepares you for the night climb.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Overnight: Barafu Camp
DAY 8: SUMMIT DAY – BARAFU → UHURU PEAK (5,895m) → MWEKA CAMP
Midnight start to the summit via Stella Point to Uhuru Peak.
Celebrate at the summit, then descend to Mweka Camp through changing landscapes.
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Overnight: Mweka Camp
