3-Day Mount Meru Trek Overview
The 3-Day Mount Meru Trek is a short but rewarding adventure that takes you to the summit of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 meters. Located inside Arusha National Park, this trek offers a unique combination of mountain climbing and wildlife viewing.The route passes through diverse landscapes including lush rainforest, open heathland, and rocky alpine terrain. Trekkers often encounter wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, and monkeys along the lower slopes. The highlight of the trek is reaching Socialist Peak, where climbers are rewarded with spectacular sunrise views and a breathtaking sight of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Although shorter than the classic route, the 3-day itinerary is ideal for fit trekkers seeking a fast and exciting mountain adventure.
Day 1: Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut
Your adventure begins at Momella Gate after registration and a short briefing from your guide and park ranger. The trek starts through open grassland and forest where wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, and antelopes can often be seen. As you continue climbing through the lush forest, you may also encounter colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species. After several hours of trekking, you will arrive at Miriakamba Hut where you will enjoy dinner and spend the night.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut
After breakfast, the trek continues through beautiful forest and heathland with stunning views of the Meru Crater and the surrounding landscapes. The trail gradually becomes steeper as you climb higher toward Saddle Hut, located just below the summit. In the afternoon, trekkers often take a short acclimatization hike to Little Meru before returning to the hut for dinner and preparation for the summit climb.
Day 3: Summit – Momella Gate
The summit attempt begins very early in the morning as you ascend toward Socialist Peak. The climb follows a narrow ridge with incredible views of the Meru Crater and surrounding landscapes. Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment, offering breathtaking views and the chance to see Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds in the distance. After celebrating your achievement, you will descend back through Saddle Hut and Miriakamba Hut before finishing the trek at Momella Gate.
